Imitation Tweed Dress - Finished product and pattern setup (measuring)

It's done! On the left, the knit version. On the right, the original version, modeled by my favorite petite Asian American.

The dress is worked from the bottom up, like normal sweaters. I have implemented some special shaping, discussed here. Since I was on a roll, I also implemented extra shaping at the chest (not really necessary for me, but for better-endowed gals out there, could be useful).

Here are some closeups, showing the textures (no pockets in my version).

And here is the very detailed schematic, with the different steps involved in knitting each piece. Sleeves will come later.

I have purposefully not put down measurements on the schematic (with the exception of one), so this can be generalized more easily. Here is how to measure each (add 1/4 inch ease to each horizontal measurement).

H1: If you have the same body type I do, half your smaller hip circumference (see discussion here). I can't pull off real pencil skirts. To determine what's flattering on you, find a pencil skirt or straight skirt you own that you like and use its half-circumference at the bottom (and length for V9)
H2: From one side, through your widest around your butt to the other side (NOT the same as half the circumference).
H3: Same as H1
H4: Half your waist circumference
H5: Around the widest of your back, through your shoulder blades.
H6: For this one, best use a sweater that fits well and use that.
The same goes for H7 and H8. Take shoulders and a neckline you like. Keep in mind that around the neck, we are going to work an inch or so of ribbing.
H9: same as H1
H10: Again, refer to a neckline you like, taking into account the 1 inch ribbed border.
H11: half your circumference below the chest
H12: from the side, through the widest of your chest in the front, to the other side. For me, to a close enough approximation, this is equal to H5 (sadly).

V1: From bottom hem to under the widest of your bottom
V2: From the widest of your bottom to the widest of your hips, viewed from the front (again, refer to Baby's body type discussion here).
V3: From the widest of your hips to the narrow of the waist
V4: 2 to 3 inches (5 to 7 cm), or more if your bust is long and slender
V5: top of the waist band to the widest of the chest
V6: top of the waist band to where you want to start the armhole (best refer to an existing garment that has fitted but comfortable sleeves)
V7: top of the waist band to the shoulder.
V8: top of the waist band to where the neck line begins (again, there is a 2" ribbed border to come)
V9: From bottom hem to the widest of the hips viewed from the front
V10: From top of waistband to widest of the chest
V11: From top of waistband to right below the chest
V12: From top of waistband to front neckline (2" ribbed border!)

In subsequent posts, we will build the pattern. I will be using my measurements as an illustration. For reference, I am 155 cm (5'1) tall, and I my chest-waist-hip measurements are 78cm - 64cm - 82cm (in inches, 31-25-32). You can see how the dress fits above.
