Tablet cover 2

Nearly a year ago, I made a cover for my tablet. It's still alive and well, but dirty. I decided to make a new one, this time using a leather like fabric. I don't know if it will help keep it cleaner or not, but it was worth a shot. I also modified the inside of the tablet cover.

I followed the pattern (number 12) more closely this time because I was working with similar fabric to what the pattern called for. The craftsmanship is not the best.

I discovered, too late, that it was best to

1) have the correct type of needle on the sewing machine or failing that

2) sew with the lining (regular) fabric facing up. That prevents the machine from pulling on the leather.

The leather fabric has some weird elasticity to it that made it difficult to work with. For the cardboard inserts, I cut up some old binders we've kept. We have a whole box of them from the 1990's, when bills etc.. were kept in paper form, and my husband and I were college students. It is the best cardboard.

To adapt the pattern to modern tablets (that have very little in the way of an edge), I used a different method for securing the tablet. I have two different ways to attach the tablet to the cover. One is a wide fabric band for transportation. With the button closure secured and the cover inserted under the band, it won't slip out of the cover.

The other is to use the tablet while keeping it with the cover. That's the job of the elastic string. It is secured at the top of bottom along with the fabric band and passes on top of the band. It is put on not too tight.

When I want to use the tablet, I open the cover and fold the front flap under. I take the tablet out from under the fabric band and slide it under the elastic. Then I wrap the elastic over two corners as shown below. The thin elastics interfere little with the use of the tablet.
