Fall colors skirt set

A few weeks back, I finished a winter pencil skirt with contrasting ruffle. The plan was to make a matching top. It's done!

Pattern

The instructions are for a petite (short torso) top that is 70 cm at the waist. For reference, I wear a 00P. But you can adjust the gauge or use your favorite sweater pattern, make the sleeves 3/4, and knit the front in two halves mirror image of each other, with a deep V neck. The knitting itself is simple, the top is made in the finishing.

Gauge
10 cm x 10 cm square in stockinette stitch: 12.5 stitches x 20 rows

Back
Cast on 50 stitches. Work in stockinette for 12 cm then start increasing for the chest 1 stitch on each side very 14 rows, for a total of 3 increases (56 stitches).
Work even until work measures 34 cm from beginning then shape armholes. Decrease 3 stitches on each side, then 2 stitches on each side, then one stitch on each side every RS row, 3 times (39 stitches left). For clean 1 stitch decreases see my post on techniques.
Work even until armhole measures 18 cm then decrease for shoulders, 2 stitches on each side very other row until there are 23 stitches left on the needles. BO remaining stitches.

Right front
Cast on 28 stitches (it's important to add a few compared to half the back for ease). Work increases on the side mirroring what was done for the back. When work measures 16 cm, while continuing to shape the sides, start decreasing for the neckline. Decrease 1 stitch at the neckline very 4th row and every 2nd row, alternating (the correct math is every 3rd row, but we want to do all the decreases on RS rows). When the time comes, shape armholes as for back. Shape shoulders same as back.

Left front
Work a mirror image of the right front.

Sleeves (make 2)
CO 32 stitches. Increase one stitch on each side every 6th and 8th row alternating (again, we need every 7th row, but we want to increase on RS rows (see my post on techniques for clean increases).
Stop increasing once you have 48 stitches on the needles (that's a total of 8 increase rows).
Work even until the sleeve is 30 cm long then shape the sleeve cap. BO 5 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows, then decrease one stitch on each side very other row 6 times (26 stitches left).
Work 8 rows even then do the final decreases. Decrease 1 stitch on each side every other row three times, then bind off 3 stitches at the beginning of the next 2 rows. BO the remaining 14 stitches.

Finishing
Steam press the pieces. Join the front panels to the back panel at the shoulders. Set in the sleeves, starting the joining to the body at the shoulder seam. Sew the sleeves along the armhole curve. Then sew the sides of the cardigan.

With a crochet hook, work a round of small loops all around the edges of the top (start at one corner front and go all the way around). Along the bottom of the top, work an additional row of bigger loops. Do the same at the cuffs of the sleeves (one round of small loops, follow with a round of bigger loops).

The technical term for this type of edging is "crochet chain edging". It's simple technique, and there are plenty of tutorials on how to do that (see for instance this one). Experiment with how long to make the chains to fit your taste.

Along the V of the neckline, attach the ruffle yarn using a crochet and a slip stitch. Sew the ends of the ruffle yarn just inside the neckline so nothing unsightly sticks out. Sew a button at the base of the neckline on the left side (if you are a lady and used to that style of buttoning). Pick a button that has the right size to pass through a loop of the edging, while holding it secure (the loop of the edging acts as a buttonhole).
