Resizing project - Gap casual top - part 2
Today I finished resizing the Gap casual top. I am very pleased with the results. Here is an after and before picture:
The shoulder seams are where they should be and there are fewer folds around the bust. The sleeves are less long. The pictures below show how much fabric came off from the sides and sleeves.
At any rate, we left off where the shell fit nicely but the sleeves needed to be reworked. That was not super difficult. I trimmed excess fabric starting at the underarm seam and tapering to rejoin the original seam further down the sleeve. I am not very big around the bust so I don't need a lot of curvature at the sleeve cap, but this is where you want to be careful in shaping the sleeve.
Before re-attaching the sleeve, I mirrored the cutting on the other sleeve. Had I been smart, I would have cut up the red twin version of that top at that point. But I have a picture record of how much to trim.
The next step is touchy. I got it wrong at first end sewed the first sleeve inside out my mistake. Turn the sleeve right side out and only then, insert it inside the inside out shell, sleeve cap first so that the top of the sleeve sticks out from the arm hole. Verify at that point that inside the shell, you have the right side of the shell facing the right side of the sleeve. Look at the picture below carefully. The wrong side of the shell is showing (it's turned inside out), while the right side of the sleeve is showing (it's turned right side out). Hope that makes sense.
Line up the edge of the sleeve hole with the edge of the sleeve cap and pin in place. Sew the seam and finish it with an overhang stitch. My sewing machine has a feature where I can "sew in the round". Super useful.
Do the same for the other sleeve. Block and cut off any thread. Finish the bottom hem of the shirt by hand.
