Spring break project: (faux) wrap pants - Day 6

The first thing I did today was to cut out some strips for a ribbon tie at the front of the pants and assemble those ties.

I cut two rectangles (13 cm x 90 cm) out of the back panel of the skirt. I don't know how long they need to be yet, but 90 cm is plenty. It's the length of the skirt.

For each strap, I pressed the long rectangle flat and sewed along the long edge and one short edge (an L shaped line of stitching). I used an overlocking stitch to finish the seams. I turned the strap inside out and pressed it flat.

Next I turned to the simple side seam of the pants (the one that will not have the side closure, we'll get to that on another day).

I turned the pants inside out and put them on. I held them the way I wanted them to hang and pinned the side to where it needed to be (I wish I had a dress form). I drew a cleaner line along where I had pinned and left one pin to hold the waist band fabric in place, near the top of the waist band. Because before we sew, we need to insert one of the straps.

The straps will be attached to the side of the pants, wrap to the front and be tied in the knot in the middle front. I pinned them to the sweater I was wearing and experimented with how they tied to find the correct length. On the unfinished end of the strap, mark the desired length with a pin.

For the next step, turn the pants so that the right sides are facing outward (the way you will wear the pants) and lay them flat with the front facing up. Insert the unfinished end of the strap, up until the mark you made. Next there are a few alignments to make.

Vertical alignment: turn the edge of the pants over just enough to see the back side. You want the bottom edge of the strap to line up with the seam of the waistband in the back. The picture below illustrates what I mean. I took it after I finished the side seam so this is completely unfolded (front panel with strap on the left, back of the pants on the left), as everything is secure.

Horizontal alignment: fold the strap over the front of the pants. It needs to line up with the top edge of the front panel. It should also overlap with the top edge of the front panel.

Find a way to secure the strap where it needs to be then carefully turn the pants inside out. Sew a straight seam from where you left off on the side of the leg to the top of the waist band.

That's it for today. It is also the end of my spring break, but I will continue to label this as "Spring break project" since I conceptualized it and started it during spring break.
